North Carolina Democratic Party Chair Bobbie Richardson had harsh words for right-wing extremist Rep. Ted Budd, who is running for the U.S. Senate against former North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley.
Richardson’s words came in an op-ed in The Charlotte Post titled “Why GOP nominee Ted Budd is wrong for North Carolina in the US Senate.”
In the piece, Richardson calls Budd, the Republican nominee, “a Washington insider who has consistently put his own interests ahead of our own” and says that Budd won the Republican primary because he was “dragged over the finish line by almost $15 million in special interests trying to buy the election from voters.”
Richardson accused Budd of “continually add[ing] to the gridlock and dysfunction in Washington, D.C.” and said that if he becomes North Carolina’s next senator “he will continue to put North Carolina last.”
Richardson goes on to say Budd “has supported tax breaks for big corporations and oil companies already making record profits off the backs of working people.”
Budd would also support raising taxes on the middle class, Richardson says in the article. She points out that Budd recently said he “agreed with the major points” of a Republican plan in the Senate that would raise taxes on 40-percent of North Carolinians.
“That would mean an average of almost $1,500 less in families’ pockets each year. North Carolinians cannot afford that,” Richardson writes.
Richardson highlights a number of good reasons why voters here should reject Budd, a Donald Trump and Mark Robinson-endorsed extremist, but she doesn’t even mention Budd’s belief that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump.
Budd objected to the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory and said in a statement after the Jan. 6 insurrection that he didn’t vote to certify Biden’s win because of “irregularities and Constitutional violations in the presidential election.”
Of course, there were no irregularities or Constitutional violations that gave Biden a win over Trump, but Budd is one of those Republicans who refuse to believe anything that goes against their delusional beliefs.
The fact that someone was able to write an op-ed about why Budd is an awful choice for North Carolina and not even mention that he’s a 2020 election conspiracy theorist makes it very clear that there are many, many good reasons to make sure he doesn’t become the next U.S. Senator from the Tar Heel State.
Richardson wraps up her piece by explaining why Beasley should be the choice of North Carolinians.
“This fall, we have the opportunity to send Cheri Beasley to the U.S. Senate. In the Senate, she’ll put North Carolina first and bring with her the values of hard work, integrity and justice that have guided her life.”
According to the latest numbers, voters might be starting to gravitate toward Beasley after a rough start for her in the polls.
An Emerson College poll (A- rating from FiveThirtyEight) conducted from May 7-9 had Budd up 48-41 on Beasley.
An East Carolina University poll (B/C rating from FiveThirtyEight) conducted on May 19 and 20 showed Budd up eight points on Beasley.
The most recent poll listed on FiveThirtyEight showed Budd up just two points on Beasley, 44-42. That poll was conducted by Cygnal (B+ rating) and sponsored by the extremely conservative John Locke Foundation. Twelve percent of respondents said they were undecided and the two-point spread is within the poll’s margin of error meaning that the race is technically a statistical dead heat.
Election Day is still months away but it’s going to take people working hard every single day from now until Nov. 8 to make sure that Rep. Ted Budd doesn’t become right-wing extremist Sen. Ted Budd.
