Cheri Beasley, Democratic Nominee for US Senate, Would Work to Protect Reproductive Rights

Cheri Beasley is the Democratic nominee in the race for North Carolina’s open Senate seat. She will face Republican nominee Ted Budd in November.

In a recent interview with WRAL, Beasley was asked about the leaked US Supreme Court opinion that indicated the Court would likely overturn Roe vs. Wade, the 1973 landmark decision that made abortion legal nationwide. Beasley emphasized the importance of women having the right to choose and said that she believes abortion is constitutional right that should be codified and protected by federal law.

“Abortion is supported by the majority of North Carolinians and the majority of Americans,” Beasley told WRAL. “We need to be responsive and respect that constitutional right, and the Senate really must codify Roe vs. Wade.”

Beasley, who earned the endorsements of several leaders and organizations, including Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America, also said she would be working hard to codify Roe v. Wade if she were in the United States Senate today.
