Gov. Cooper And Governors Meet With President Biden To Protect States Abortion Access

Source: WRAL

Last month’s Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade has put the spotlight on states to defend reproductive health care access.

As extremist Republican politicians are increasingly proposing abortion bans and access restrictions, many governors across the nation are stepping up and crafting ways to ensure the protection of those seeking reproductive health care services.

In the wake of the court’s decision, several Democratic governors met with President Joe Biden to discuss expanding protections and defending the fundamental right of reproductive freedom.

In the video conference with nine governors, including Governor Roy Cooper, the leaders urged the Biden administration to secure abortion access through federal facilities such as, “veterans hospitals, military bases and other places where the federal government controls the jurisdiction in some of the states that are hostile to women’s rights and make sure that those services are available to other women.”

In addition, Biden underscored the federal government’s commitment to protecting the rights of those seeking services to cross state lines and ensuring medications remain available.

“That Constitutional right that women have relied on for [nearly] five decades has been ripped away,” stated Gov. Roy Cooper. “For now, at least, where you live will determine your rights. So, for now, it’s up to the states to determine whether women can get reproductive health care, and in North Carolina, they still can.”
