NC High School Principal’s Racist Response on Facebook to UNC Campus Shooting Goes Viral

A Wayne County high school principal received swift backlash after posting a racist response to the UNC-Chapel Hill shooting on her personal Facebook page following the Aug. 28 fatal shooting in a campus lab, CBS 17 reported.

Wendy Waters, principal of Spring Creek High School, called herself a “mad mamma” in the now-viral post where she wrote that “There is nothing WHITE about” shooting suspect Tailei Qi and said “My bet is he’s a Chinese Nationalist … stealing our intellectual property working for the CCP!!”

She ended her post by writing in all caps that “We need to decouple from people who hate us!!!”

Waters’ ill-advised post spread quickly online after someone posted about it on Reddit. The post received close to 1,000 reactions in less than 12 hours.

Once the post was brought to the school district’s attention, they released a statement saying that Waters’ comments “in no way reflects the views of the school district” and that the post “is under review.”

CBS 17 was able to reach Waters by phone but she refused to make any comment to the TV station.

Though information so far is limited, all indications point to the suspect’s actions being related to issues he had with the victim, Zijie Yan, an associate professor in the Department of Applied Physical Sciences at UNC.

North Carolina Asian Americans Together, a Raleigh-based nonpartisan, nonprofit advocacy organization, got to work quickly in the aftermath of the shooting. The group hosted a webinar on Aug. 29 “to help reflect & process” the shooting and also honored the life of Yan at a candlelight vigil in Cary on Sept. 5 that dozens of community members showed up for.

As of the date of this writing, no update has been provided about Waters from her school or the district
