North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has endorsed Attorney General Josh Stein in the state’s 2024 governor’s race, according to WRAL. The Governor highlighted Stein’s long career of helping the state in his endorsement.
“With a record of results and a clear-eyed vision for our future, Josh is ready for this job,” said Cooper during his endorsement, “He will double down on the progress that we’ve made.”
Stein’s accomplishments as Attorney General include advocating for, and receiving, more funding and resources dedicated to tackling the state’s backlog of untested rape kits as well as helping to negotiate a national settlement with drug companies over the nation’s opioid epidemic.
Stein is the only Democrat to have formally announced their candidacy for governor so far; now serving his second term as attorney general, Stein was also a state senator for several years. Supreme Court Justice Michael Morgan has reportedly contemplated joining the gubernatorial race following his retirement from the bench, but has yet to announce an official run. The primaries are scheduled for March 5.
On the other side of the aisle, the Republican primary field is quite crowded. As it stands now, there are five Republicans running for the nomination in 2024.
