This fall, the City of Durham and Durham County will be distributing hotspots with free internet service to 600 low-income households.
The new MiFi Distribution Program, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), will provide eligible homes with reliable connectivity.
“Access to affordable, reliable internet isn’t a luxury anymore. It’s a necessity for school, work, and daily life. This program helps make sure every Durham resident has the tools they need to connect, learn, and thrive,” said Patrice Carroll, Digital Inclusion Program Manager for the City of Durham’s Engagement Department.
Durham is just the latest city to utilize the American Rescue Plan to expand broadband access for working-class families. Signed into law by President Biden in 2021, the ARPA has funded over 240 broadband projects in 25 states.
North Carolina has made significant progress in expanding internet access this year.
Governor Josh Stein recently announced more than $63 million in projects to connect nearly 19,000 households and businesses in 30 counties to high-speed internet. These projects are funded by more than $44 million from the ARPA and nearly $19 million from broadband providers.
The Durham application is open in English and Spanish through November 2025, or until funds run out. Devices will be distributed starting in September 2025.
