Failed County, Statewide Candidate Michele Morrow Now Hoping to Become US Secretary of Education Under Trump

Source: WRAL

North Carolina voters rejected far-right MAGA extremist Michele Morrow in her bid to become the state’s next superintendent of public schools, but that doesn’t mean she plans to go away.

According to WRAL, Morrow, who lost to Democrat Mo Green, is now asking Donald Trump to name her as the new U.S. Secretary of Education, or another top job in the department where she can influence national education policies.

Although state and local governments handle most education policy in the country, the federal education department’s duties include handling student loans, funding special education programs, monitoring schools and colleges for allegations of racial or gender-based discrimination and controlling funding to schools in low-income areas.

Morrow said if she gets the job she would try to cut the department’s work on racial equity and withhold funding from states that disagree with that decision. She said racial equity goes against her “pro-America” approach to schooling.

“They have been literally been tying the hands of the states and saying, ‘You are not going to receive your education dollars from us unless you have [critical race theory] trainings for teachers, unless you have a [diversity, equity and inclusion] program in every one of your counties, unless you are participating in the [social and emotional learning] program,'” Morrow said. “I think we should do the opposite. I think we should say, ‘Alright, you are not going to be receiving funds unless you are pushing a pro-America — a pro-excellence-in-education — merit-based system.'”

As is the case with the majority of Morrow’s claims, what she told WRAL is false.

For those curious where this talk of Morrow working in the Trump administration is even coming from, it appears that a petition on a website tied to Robert F. Kennedy Jr. put Morrow forward to be considered for the job. The site allows users to “nominate” and “vote” on who they would like to see fill political positions.

Morrow told WRAL she didn’t write the nomination herself and said she hasn’t spoken with the Trump campaign or the White House transition team.

Morrow was crushed by 20 points in a Wake County School Board race in 2022 and lost a much closer election for a statewide position this time around. Despite going 0-for-2 in elections and running nearly 200,000 votes behind Trump, Morrow said she believes her message is resonating with Republican voters.

A spokesperson for the North Carolina Democratic Party referenced those results when contacted by WRAL, questioning if Trump would support someone who has never won a race. They added that if Morrow did get the job, she “would destroy public schools in America.”

During her run for state superintendent, Morrow made headlines (along with Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson) when she said that, if elected, she would reject more than $1 billion in federal education funding for the state.
