Gov. Stein announces $9 million in grants for organizations helping with Helene recovery

Earlier this month, North Carolina Governor Josh Stein announced that 14 nonprofit organizations have been granted more than $9 million to implement housing repair and reconstruction projects in Helene-impacted counties in Western North Carolina.

“More than a year has passed since Hurricane Helene, and we are fortunate that so many volunteer organizations have stepped up to help their neighbors in need. Their tireless work is critical to our ongoing efforts to get western North Carolinians back in their homes,” Gov. Stein said.

According to a report commissioned by WNC Nonprofit Pathways and Dogwood Health Trust, more than half of the nonprofits in western NC, including many volunteer organizations, pivoted to disaster relief and recovery work.

This funding will help support the operations and reconstruction projects of many organizations on the ground.

The 14 organizations who received the funding are:

  • All Hands All Hearts (AHAH)
  • Ashe County Recovery & Restoration
  • Appalachian Service Project
  • Avery County Amy Wellness Foundation
  • Baptists on Mission
  • Camp Grier
  • Fuller Center Disaster Rebuilders
  • Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity
  • Transylvania Habitat for Humanity
  • Henderson County Thermal Belt Habitat
  • Housing Assistance Corporation
  • Operation Helo
  • FUMC Waynesville
  • Western NC Conference of the United Methodist Church

The grant funding was made possible through the state’s Disaster Recovery Act of 2025, and any volunteer organization actively involved in ongoing repair and reconstruction projects in the Helene-impacted counties is eligible to apply.

Stein’s office announced that a new notice of funding opportunity will be released in the near future to continue the granting of awards supporting recovery. Using these state-funded grants, volunteer organizations have already completed repairs on more than 500 homes.
