North Carolina A&T State University’s library, the F.D. Bluford Library, was awarded a $300,000 digital champion grant from the North Carolina Department of Information Technology’s Office of Broadband and Digital Equity (NCDIT).

NC A&T was among the 63 community service, nonprofit, higher education and regional organizations in North Carolina to receive funding.

The Digital Champion grants are part of Gov. Roy Cooper’s plan to expand access to high-speed internet and address issues of affordability and digital literacy across the state.

In a June 2024 press release from the NCDIT, Cooper said, “All North Carolinians need the resources and skills to safely and effectively use high-speed internet and benefit from the opportunities it offers. Digital Champion grants will help more families take part in our increasingly digital world to work, learn, access vital telehealth services and connect with others online.”

Each program grantee will partner with the NCDIT to work directly with the target populations identified in the Digital Equity Act. These populations include low-income households, rural residents, senior citizens, folx who are incarcerated, folx with disabilities, veterans, and individuals with a language barrier.

More than $30 million was awarded to develop or expand digital equity programming to help North Carolinians afford high-speed internet, obtain digital devices, and access digital literacy resources.

Gov. Stein continues the fight for more affordable energy bills

“Duke Energy’s proposed rate hike is simply too high and comes as the company is also retreating on more affordable clean energy. At a time when families are struggling to make ends meet, we should be doing everything we can to make life more affordable, not less. I will continue to fight on behalf of every North Carolinian to lower costs and grow the economy,” said Stein.

Governor Stein Proposes $13.5 Billion Federal Aid Package for Western NC

The Governor’s message was rooted in a stark disparity: while the federal government has committed roughly $7 billion to North Carolina since the 2024 storm, that figure represents only 12% of the estimated $60 billion in total damages. By contrast, Stein noted that major disasters like Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy saw federal coverage closer to 70%.
