Sarah Stevens is running for a seat on our state’s highest court, claiming she’ll be tough on crime, but she has faced criticism for her record of raising money with predators like convicted child sex offender Harvey West. Stevens’ critics say she has a long record of protecting abusers and the people who support them.
A recent Stevens social media post adds evidence to the narrative that she supports predators and abusers. On August 4th, Stevens posted a picture of herself at a $3,500-per-ticket fundraiser with U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson. Speaker Johnson made national news this week by voicing strong support for Ohio Representative Max Miller, who is facing calls from Republicans to resign after evidence surfaced that he has abused his two-year-old daughter and ex-wife Emily Moreno.
Miller has used Johnson’s support to fend off bipartisan calls for his resignation, including from Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Senator Bernie Moreno, Miller’s former father-in-law.
Senator Moreno said that he was forced to speak out due to Miller’s “increasingly erratic and dangerous behavior,” writing, “Max Miller needs serious psychological help. He is a danger to my daughter, and I hold my breath every minute he has custody of my granddaughter. If there are any basic standards of character required to hold elected office, Max Miller fails them. He should not serve in the House of Representatives. I believe Max Miller needs to seek professional help to end the clear pattern of abuse he has left in his wake. I believe he should not be free to continue endangering others until he does.”
Moreno’s call for Miller’s resignation was joined by Republican Senators Shelly Moore Capito, Roger Marshall, and Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune, who also telegraphed his desire for Miller to drop out.
Despite those prominent Republicans coming out against Miller, Johnson reiterated his support for him this morning, just hours after being photographed with Stevens and Rep. Virginia Foxx.
Neither Stevens nor Rep. Foxx have publicly weighed in on the Miller domestic abuse scandal.
Stevens and Rep. Foxx have also been silent on the sexual harassment scandal surrounding North Carolina Congressman Chuck Edwards.
A House Ethics Committee investigation found that Edwards sexually harassed his employees and created a hostile work environment. The married congressman was investigated for showering young female staffers with gifts, making unwanted comments on their appearance, and was even found to have skipped votes in Congress to help one young female staffer decorate her Christmas tree. The House Ethics Committee recommended his censure, and Republican Senators Ted Budd and Thom Tillis called on Edwards to drop his re-election bid.
Edwards has since removed his name from the November ballot.
Her fundraising appearance with Johnson will no doubt raise questions with voters as Stevens is hounded by credible accusations of a long record of supporting abusers and predators.
