‘Big Lie’ Proponent Cleta Mitchell Hosting Fundraiser For US Senate Candidate Ted Budd

Cleta Mitchell, a conservative attorney who was integral to Trump’s effort to overturn the 2020 election results, is holding a fundraiser later today for North Carolina Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Ted Budd, according to the News & Observer.

Mitchell is most widely known for being on the phone with former president Donald Trump when he implored the Georgia Secretary of State to “find” the votes he needed to win the 2020 presidential election.

It’s no secret that Ted Budd is an avid election denier; he’s a Trump loyalist whose success in the Republican primary for US Senate could be largely attributed to Trump’s endorsement. However, while Budd has been touting his Trump endorsement non-stop, the Congressman skipped every debate in the primary and overall has completely avoided questions regarding the 2020 election and the widely televised January 6 Committee hearings

When the N&O asked Jonathan Felts, senior adviser to Budd, if he was concerned by the appearance of having someone so involved in the Jan. 6 investigations hosting a fundraiser for Budd, Felts said he wasn’t sure what a reporter was referring to.

Felts told the N&O, “We’ve been endorsed by President Trump and Democrats have been using that same message against (Budd) now dating back to March of last year, so it didn’t have much of an impact in the primary and I don’t think it will have much of an impact in the General Election.”

Dory MacMillan, a spokeswoman for Budd’s Democratic opponent, Cheri Beasley, said she wasn’t surprised.

According to the N&O, MacMillan said, “Given Congressman Budd’s record of siding with special interests and wealthy donors over North Carolinians, it’s unsurprising that Congressman Budd is more focused on spending time with out-of-touch mega-donors pushing the Big Lie than hard-working North Carolinians.”
