Big Changes Coming to North Carolina’s State Health Plan

Source: News & Observer

North Carolina State Treasurer Dale Folwell announced in early January that thousands of teachers and state employees will be getting a different insurance company in charge of their health plan starting in 2025.

According to The News & Observer, Folwell announced that the 40-plus year relationship with Blue Cross NC will come to an end and the State Health Plan Board awarded the new contract to Aetna.

Unfortunately, state employees won’t know more details regarding the future of their insurance coverage until over a year from now before fall open enrollment in 2024.

Treasurer Folwell claimed that the switch to Aetna Insurance will save the state $140 million over five years, however, his reasoning for that claim as well as what that will cost the teachers and other state employees in terms of plan benefits and services remains to be seen

An estimated 740,000 people, including teachers, their dependents, retirees, and more, will be affected by the change.
