NC Attorney General Josh Stein Stands Up For Reproductive Rights

North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein recently confirmed that he would not be asking a federal court to lift an injunction on an NC law banning nearly all abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, according to the Associated Press.

Stein’s decision came after NC Republican legislative leaders demanded Stein act to lift the injunction in the aftermath of the overturning of Roe v Wade.

Stein said about his decision, “The Department of Justice will not take action that would restrict women’s ability to make their own reproductive health care decisions… protecting that ability is more important than ever, as states across the nation are banning abortions in all instances, including rape and incest.”

While our Attorney General was working to protect women’s ability to make their own choices, Senate leader Phil Berger and House Speaker Tim Moore warned Stein that they would likely take legal action of their own in order to reinstate the ban if Stein did not.

As it stands now, Republicans hold majorities in both chambers of the General Assembly. As a result, the only thing ensuring that North Carolinians have access to the health care they need is Governor Cooper’s veto power and actions like Attorney General Josh Stein’s.

North Carolina receives ‘F’ grades for education funding in new report

“North Carolina’s failing grades reflect years of deliberate neglect. Lawmakers have refused to fully fund our public schools, denied educators meaningful raises, and the Supreme Court has allowed Leandro to languish. Our children cannot afford this continued failure of leadership,” said Tamika Walker Kelly, President of the NC Association of Educators.
