Track and Field Coach George Williams, renowned for his impressive career and global influence, is set to receive a remarkable new accolade: a highway interchange will be named in his honor.

“George Williams is my father, a role model, and a mentor who saw potential in me that I didn’t even recognize in myself,” said Bershawn Jackson, Olympic Medalist and Track Coach.

Williams’ illustrious career spans 44 years at Saint Augustine’s University, where he has made a profound impact. An esteemed alum, he guided his alma mater to 39 NCAA Division II national titles and was named Division II National Coach of the Year 20 times.

“Coach George Williams is truly a legend,” remarked Chris Coleman, NC State Track and Field Coach.

Beyond his achievements at the collegiate level, Williams also coached the U.S. Olympic men’s track and field teams in 2004 and led various U.S. teams in international competitions.

“I always tell my student-athletes that God doesn’t make winners or losers—He makes choosers,” Williams shared.

Williams’ dedication to track and field and his philosophy on making the right choices began early in his life. He recalled, “We were among the first to integrate Morris Park in Miami, Florida. I’ve been blessed with opportunities because of perseverance and endurance, regardless of the circumstances.”

His influence extends beyond athletics, with many of his former athletes becoming community leaders, such as N.C. State University Jump Coach Chris Coleman.

“My daughters and I grew up on the track. He’s become a grandfather figure to them, and his impact on my life has been immeasurable,” Coleman said.

The Coach George Williams Interchange will be located at the junction of New Bern Avenue and Interstate 440, a tribute approved by the North Carolina Department of Transportation following a request from the Raleigh City Council.

“I never imagined something like this when I was doing what I love,” Williams remarked.

Olympic medalist Bershawn Jackson expressed his enthusiasm for the recognition, stating, “It’s incredible to see his greatness acknowledged. He truly deserves this honor.”

Senator Dan Blue, a longtime supporter of Williams, emphasized the significance of the tribute: “This dedication reflects his lifelong commitment to teaching and sharing his knowledge with others.”

Williams’ legacy will be forever commemorated at a prominent location where countless people will see his name every day.
