Republican Representative Allen Chesser has held the 25th district seat in the North Carolina House since 2022. Since his time in the NC General Assembly, Chesser has been a proponent of extreme policies, including limiting reproductive health care options and eroding gun safety measures.
In the latest legislative session, Chesser has supported policies that would harm families and hardworking North Carolinians.
While the cost of living, electricity bills, and prices for groceries continue to skyrocket, Chesser is part of the group of North Carolina Republicans who support the ongoing war and tariffs that are hurting North Carolina families.
Additionally, Chesser sided with Duke Energy to raise rates on customers through his vote for Senate Bill 266. According to Karly Brownfield, the Senior Carolinas & Virginia Program Manager with the Southeastern Wind Coalition, studies showed SB 266 will actually put North Carolina’s electricity sector and economic future at risk.
Ultimately, Chesser voted for a bill that would shift the cost of electricity from large industrial users onto the backs of North Carolinians — forcing customers to pay up to $23 billion through 2050 due to higher fuel costs.
To add more fuel to the fire, Chesser also supported kicking hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians off their health insurance. In his iVoterGuide earlier this year, Chesser called for the complete repeal of Obamacare, also known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
The Affordable Care Act has expanded health care protections, improved access to quality care, and reduced costs for Americans who needed better health coverage. In North Carolina, the ACA provides financial relief to millions of insured families who struggle to pay for health insurance.
Chesser’s stance to kick North Carolinians off their health insurance comes as Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act is set to impact millions of uninsured Americans. This federal law, passed by Congress last year, imposes stricter eligibility requirements for people covered under Medicaid expansion, creating a barrier to access health insurance for the more than 725,000 North Carolinians who depend on it.
Chesser has also supported extreme education policies. In 2023, Chesser voted in favor of the state budget, which supported taking millions from public school budgets to fund vouchers for tuition at unaccountable private schools.
According to a report from the Department of Public Instruction (DPI), the vouchers go to some of the richest families in the state who do not need the help. Additionally, over 87 percent of new school vouchers in 2024-2025 went to families who have never attended a public school, according to the report.
Instead of fighting to improve K-12 public schools and teacher pay, Chesser’s support of the school voucher program further weakened public schools.
For too long, families, students, and working North Carolinians have been impacted by Chesser’s extreme policy decisions. In November, North Carolinians will have a chance to change this.
For the NC House District 25 seat, Chesser is facing off against Democratic candidate Lorenza Wilkins. Wilkins is a long-time resident of Nash County who currently serves as Chief Administrative Officer at the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle.
Wilkins is campaigning to increase teacher pay and job training programs so students are career-ready, foster an environment where businesses continue to come to the state, and improve affordability for working North Carolinians.
