Gov. Roy Cooper has vetoed a voter suppression bill passed in late August by Republicans in the state House and Senate, but it’s only a matter of time before the legislature overrides his veto and puts numerous anti-voting laws on the books in North Carolina.
Earlier this month, Republican lawmakers overrode Governor Cooper’s vetoes and passed a slate of anti-LGBTQ bills targeting vulnerable children. The laws include a ban on gender-affirming medical care for transgender kids, a ban on trans girls playing women’s sports, and a requirement that schools out trans kids to their parents.
Last week, Governor Roy Cooper vetoed a bill that would transfer some of the governor’s powers to the Republican-led legislature, calling it “unconstitutional.”
North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson is facing a crowded primary on his way to seeking the Republican nomination for Governor. And his fellow candidates are not content to make it easy for him.
“The legislature finally comes back to pass legislation that discriminates, makes housing less safe, blocks FEMA disaster recovery funding, hurts the freedom to vote and damages our economy,” Gov. Roy Cooper said.

More than 400 people have attended the first five of the 19 scheduled town halls, with local state lawmakers invited to each town hall. No Republican lawmakers have attended the town halls, but seven Democrats have.
The twice-impeached disgraced former president was recently indicted for a fourth time in the last five months, bringing the total number of charges across all four cases to 91. Multiple North Carolinians are also facing charges.
