Another win for equality came recently when the Garner Town Council unanimously approved Wake County’s non-discrimination ordinance, the seventh community in the county to do so.
The ordinance bans discrimination such as gender identity, sexual orientation and natural hair and fills the gap not covered by state or federal discrimination protections. People who feel they have been discriminated against can file a complaint with the county and go through a dispute resolution process handled by Campbell University Law School.
Wake County commissioners passed the measure last year, but it only applied to unincorporated areas. Each city and town in the county must pass their own version.
Raleigh, Cary, Knightdale, Apex, Morrisville, and Wendell have also passed the ordinance. Town councils in Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Zebulon, Rolesville and Wake Forest have yet to vote on it.
As the damage caused by the HB2 “Bathroom Bill” is slowly undone we continue to hope more local municipalities pass similar ordinances. With the majority of Americans in support of LGBTQ+ discrimination protections, there seems little reason not to.
